The much-needed Gay Insurrection

While reading DeWayne Wickham’s article about Obama’s ridiculous relationship with Rick Warren, “Warren could be Obama’s Booker T. Washington,” I came across a comment that was truthful, smart and spirited. I’ve thought about the same thing before, actually read it as a suggestion in another article (which one I have forgotten), but never has it been framed into such clear words for me.

“[Quote from Wickham's article] ‘ “You don’t have to see eye to eye to walk hand in hand,” he said in a speech to a group of Muslims in California.’

Actually, yes you do. I, as a black male, will not walk hand in hand with a person who hates black people. Period. I will not tolerate, validate, or seek common ground with hate.

Why should (and why do) gay people tolerate people who hate them? If the gay community believes that Warren is an instrument of gay hatred — and they have a strong case — there is absolutely no reason for them to show anything but animosity towards Obama’s choice of Warren to lead the nation in prayer.

If Obama had chosen the Grand Dragon of the KKK in the interest of diversity, I would be beyond intolerant[;] I’d be calling for Obama’s head on a platter. Until gay people stop the complacent self-loathing, realize that Obama is not their friend, and muster up a righteous rage against those who would oppress them they will never gain equality. Bank on it.”

Amen! (The secular kind, of course.)

So, I stopped doing comments on my blog. Twitter, Facebook, and good-old e-mail do a much better job, in my experience and opinion.
