So, Lycos Europe is dead. That is a bare fact and in itself not a big surprise, as it has been known to be so for months now. You know, even though I’ve had a rough couple of years with Lycos as my web hosting company (after a joyful first honeymoon month, because my first hosting company was a real Satanic company), I am sad and a bit angry that they’re going out of business.
I mean, the switch to my new web host is going to be one hell of a process, I just know it. Last week I finally signed with Strato and a part of me is already regretting it. Not just because Strato is German and as a Dutchman I’m subjected to unconsciously disliking everything German (Lycos Europe was a Dutch company), but also because I now have been informed that only the domains will be transformed, and not the actual websites. (Well, I wasn’t really informed. If I had been, no biggie, but I had to find out for myself. Already lost one website.)
Which means that I have to backup everything and not just the essentials. Now, is this ridiculous? YES! Are they kidding me with this? The transfer from my first host to Lycos was a mess (it took six months, a legal fight and a lot of screaming), but at least they transfered the website in the end and not just the domain name. I’m already hating Strato and I haven’t even been with them that long! Heck, I haven’t even paid the bills yet and I’m already pissed off.
I just know this is all going to end in tears — metaphorically speaking. Sure, I might be a sobbing mess after every “Grey’s Anatomy” episode (even the cheery ones), but that doesn’t mean that I’m a cry baby! And all right, Gone With the Wind also brings me to tears, but who doesn’t transform in first-act Kate Winslet in The Holiday after seeing that? … Oh, whatever.
All that I’m trying to say with this rambly post is that the site can be down for a while when the transfer is accepted and the domain name is transfered. (Stupid Strato!)
"Hey, I just wanted to — Wait. Where did the commenting form go?"
So, I stopped doing comments on my blog. Twitter, Facebook, and good-old e-mail do a much better job, in my experience and opinion.
